Plan B: An Agenda For Immediate Climate Action

Environment Victoria and a coalition of national and peak state-based environment organisations have released a new report outlining a suite of measures that can be in place within two years to put Australia in reach of halving its greenhouse gas emissions within a decade.

The good news is that many of the measures outlined in the report will create jobs, reduce fuel and electricity bills and create a new clean energy economy.

While we recognise the need for a strong price on carbon, and we envisage that these measures would work along side this, the groups agree that the federal government’s proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme will fail to provide the price signal needed to reduce emissions.

The federal government needs to go back to the drawing board and introduce a scheme that will put a price on carbon that drives down Australia’s greenhouse pollution.  In the meantime, the government must get on the with job of implementing the measures outlined in PLAN B to ensure that Australia’s emission immediately start to fall and to put us in reach of deep cuts in the future.
